Cosgrove High School – Envelope Group

More than providing signs to help students find their way, we also adapted a statutory safety requirement into a roll call — a statement of pride that includes the name of every student currently enrolled at the school. Not chronological, not alphabetical and not in any order of achievement. The gesture is about representation and belonging, bringing to life the school’s motto ‘each for all’ to life. A clarion call that hasn’t changed since the school’s inauguration in 1951.

To complement Liminal’s carefully crafted architecture, a carefully crafted custom typeface Cosgrove Ultra Narrow was born.

When I walked out of the school grounds in December 1982, I thought I would never return. Giving something back to my high school has been one of the highlights of my career. Building pride in an institution is about recognition so we also asked students to interview and photograph somebody at the school they admire. Maybe it’s their favourite teacher, a best friend or a relative that was a student at Cosgrove in the past. Students then create a poster to be hung throughout the school giving them agency in how people they admire are represented.
